The Siren
Kahlen belongs to a sisterhood of sirens, and the same speech has been given to every girl who joins it: she must never do anything that might expose the secret, she cannot form close bonds with humans because she is deadly to them, and she pays for her eventual freedom with obedience and time.
About
The Siren is a fantasy novel by Kiera Cass, first published in 2009. Kahlen belongs to a sisterhood of sirens who serve the Ocean, and the terms of that service are handed to every girl who enters it in the same words: never do anything that might expose the sisterhood, and in general do not form close bonds with human beings.
The rule exists because the sirens are deadly to people. They can speak to one another and to the Ocean, but to a human they are essentially a weapon, and a very beautiful one. Kahlen has lived by those terms for years, waiting out her obedience and her time, because the bargain she accepted promises that once she is finished she gets to live a life she can call her own.
Then Akinli enters her world, and the life she has been waiting for stops looking like the one she wants. The novel sets the sisterhood's hard rule against the attachment she forms, and it makes the cost of the arrangement concrete: the secret has to hold, the human has to be kept at a distance, and Kahlen is the one who has to decide whether either is still possible.
