The Rescue
Denise Holton has moved to Edenton, North Carolina, with her four-year-old son Kyle, who has severe learning disabilities and cannot yet speak.
About
The Rescue is a novel by the American writer Nicholas Sparks, published in 2000 and set in the small town of Edenton, North Carolina.
Denise is a former teacher who gave up her job to spend her days teaching Kyle how to make sounds, and the book is attentive to the practical grind of that work and to the fact that nobody else in her life treats it as important. Taylor has his own history, which the novel discloses slowly and which is the reason he treats commitment as a threat rather than a goal, and the damage runs through his relationships with the women he has left behind. Sparks's son Ryan was the model for the child in the book, and the premise of a rescue bringing two people together is the pattern he used repeatedly in this period. The novel went to number two on the New York Times bestseller list in October 2000 in its first week and reached number one the following week, and it was written in the years when his earlier books were making him one of the best-selling novelists in the United States.
