The Rebel Bride
Judy did not want to marry Chris Voulis, and she had wanted to marry somebody else entirely.
About
The Rebel Bride is a romance novel by the English writer Anne Hampson, published in 1971 by Mills and Boon.
Judy has grown up on Cyprus in a community where marriages are arranged by the families, and the marriage to Chris Voulis was settled for her before she had any say in it. She had wanted to marry someone else, and the novel follows what she does with a life she did not choose: the advice of a married friend about starting as you mean to go on, the expectations of the household she has married into, and the man she is married to, who is neither the villain nor the answer to her wishes. Hampson wrote many novels for Mills and Boon, and this one has the characteristics of the line in this period: an exotic setting, a marriage that is the frame rather than the conclusion, and a heroine whose unhappiness is about the position she has been placed in rather than about any failure of the man.
The publisher's romances of the 1960s and 1970s were written to a strict form and length, and the authors who supplied them, including Hampson and her contemporaries, wrote several books a year.
