The Ocean at the End of the Lane
A man comes back to the town he grew up in for a funeral and finds himself at the farm at the end of the lane, where he remembers a girl called Lettie Hempstock, who had told him that the pond behind her house was an ocean.
About
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a novel by the British writer Neil Gaiman, published on 18 June 2013 through William Morrow. An illustrated edition with artwork by Elise Hurst followed in 2019.
The narrator is an unnamed man who has returned to his childhood town for a funeral. He goes back to the places where he and his sister grew up, and at the end of the lane he stops at the farm where Lettie Hempstock lived with her mother and her grandmother.
What he remembers there begins forty years earlier, when he was seven. Lettie had told him that the pond behind the farmhouse was an ocean, and he had not thought about her for decades. He had not expected the place to be there still, and being there is what lets the rest of it come back.
The book is about the distance between childhood and adulthood and about the search for a self, and it was voted the book of the year at the British Book Awards.
