The Missing
Grace Byler is twenty-one and wants to find her mother, who left the family home three weeks ago without explanation, taking nothing and leaving no word.
About
The Missing is a novel by the American writer Beverly Lewis, published in 2009 and the second book in a series about a family in an Amish community.
Grace has been living with the consequences of her mother's disappearance since the morning she found the bedroom empty, and her attempts to find out what happened put her at odds with her father and with the bishop. She has also ended her engagement to a young man who was more obedient than warm, and the arrival of somebody she had believed was courting her best friend complicates a decision she thought she had made. The other story the book tells is that of Heather Nelson, an outsider whose mother is dead and who is ill herself, and whose visit brings her into contact with the family. Lewis writes the community from the inside, with the dialect and the rules of the settlement in play.
It is the second of the Seasons of Grace novels and follows the events of the first book.
