The Last to Vanish

The Last to Vanish is a thriller by the American writer Megan Miranda, published in 2022.

Abigail Lovett came to the North Carolina mountain town of Cutter's Pass ten years ago and fell into a job she loves, running The Passage Inn, a comfortable resort in a place best known for its rafting, its hiking, its waterfall and its access to the Appalachian trail. It is known for something else as well: a series of disappearances that have never been solved.

The novel begins when the journalist Landon West, who was staying at the inn to investigate that history and the trail where the people vanished, disappears himself. Abigail has sometimes felt like an outsider in the town, but she has come to think of Cutter's Pass as home, so when Landon's brother Trey turns up looking for answers, she notices how quickly the town closes ranks around the subject.

She remains on the outside of whatever the people around her know. When she finds evidence that could bring the truth nearer, she discovers how little she actually knows about her colleagues, her neighbours and the people closest to her.
