The Last Thing He Told Me

The Last Thing He Told Me is a mystery thriller by Laura Dave, published on 4 May 2021. Its central character, Hannah Hall, has been married for a year when her husband disappears.

Owen Michaels vanishes during an embezzlement investigation, and before he goes he gets a note to Hannah: protect her. She knows who he means, because the only person it could be is his sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey.

Bailey lost her mother tragically as a child and has made it clear that she wants nothing to do with her new stepmother. After the two of them find a duffel bag that Owen left behind with more than six hundred thousand dollars in cash, Bailey has to depend on Hannah for answers. The bag does not fit his story.

The FBI becomes involved and Hannah learns that her husband has been hiding his true identity. What follows is a search that starts in California and moves to Texas, where both of them have reasons to think part of the truth has been left behind.
