The Last of the Mohicans
During the French and Indian War the daughters of a British commander are escorted through the wilderness towards a fort under siege, accompanied by an outlawed scout called Hawkeye and two Mohican men, Chingachgook and his son Uncas.
About
The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 is an 1826 historical romance by the American writer James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second book of his Leatherstocking Tales and the best known of them, and it is set during the French and Indian War.
The plot is a journey that goes wrong. Cora and Alice Munro are being taken to join their father at Fort William Henry, and their escort includes a frontier scout called Hawkeye, his friend Chingachgook and Chingachgook's son Uncas, the last of the Mohicans of the title. The party is betrayed by a guide, pursued through the forest and caught up in the siege and the fighting around it.
Cooper wrote the Leatherstocking books out of order, and this is the one that established the frontier scout as a figure in American fiction. It has been adapted many times, it is read both as an adventure and as a source of ideas about the period that later writers argued with, and it remains the book most readers begin Cooper with.
