The Last Kids on Earth
Jack Sullivan is a foster child who has been left behind by the end of the world, and he has decided to make the best of it: a fortified tree house, unlimited junk food and video games, and a monster or two to deal with now and then.
About
The Last Kids on Earth is an illustrated novel for younger readers by the American writer Max Brallier, published in 2015 and illustrated by Douglas Holgate.
The book is set after an apocalypse has emptied Jack Sullivan's town, leaving him alone with the monsters that came with it. Jack is a foster child who has spent his life being moved around, and his response to the end of the world is to enjoy it: he fortifies a tree house and stocks it with what he can find, and he spends his days playing games and avoiding the creatures outside. The novel follows his attempt to put together a team, which brings him a small group of other children, including a girl who is better at fighting than he is, and the book is written in a comic register, with illustrations on most pages. It is the first of a series, and it was adapted into an animated television series, with the monsters treated as part of an adventure rather than as a source of dread.
