The Last Cavalier
A captain in the Confederate cavalry is in the middle of a battle when the air around him turns to a strange mist, and he finds himself somewhere he does not recognise.
About
The Last Cavalier is a romance by the American writer Heather Graham, published in 1993. It mixes a historical setting with time travel, and it belongs to the run of paranormal romances she wrote in that period.
Jason Tarkenton is a captain in the Confederate cavalry, and the book opens with him in the middle of a battle, with the air hot with smoke and loud with rifle fire. Then a mist comes down, and the true nightmare, as the novel has it, begins.
Vickie Knox is a woman of the present day who has dressed in the clothes of the past to take part in a re-enactment. The playing ends when a man steps out of the mist and captures her, and from that point neither of them is acting.
The two of them should never have met and should never have loved, and the novel follows the working out of how the past and the present came to be joined, and what it will take to put them back.
