The Immortal Highlander
Adam Black is immortal, arrogant and free to go wherever he likes, which has made him a great many enemies in the faerie courts.
About
The Immortal Highlander is a romance novel by the American writer Karen Marie Moning, published in 2004.
Adam has appeared in the author's earlier books as a troublemaker with access to the fae courts, and this novel takes his power away, which turns a figure who has always been in control into somebody dependent on a woman's cooperation. Gabrielle has good reasons to want nothing to do with either world, since being able to see what other people cannot has cost her more than it has given her, and the novel's romance runs on the two of them negotiating what each is willing to risk. Because Adam cannot be seen or heard by anybody else, the two of them have to do everything together, and the practical difficulty of hiding a man nobody else can perceive gives the romance a comic edge as well as a deadline. Moning writes the faery courts as a legal system as much as a magical one, so the curse has terms that can be studied and argued with, and the couple's problem is a matter of who can be trusted to keep a bargain. The book was followed by the Fever series, which is set in the same fictional world and became the author's best-known work.
