The Housemaid Is Watching
The narrator has moved into a house of her own with her husband and children, on a quiet street where the neighbours introduce themselves over the fence.
About
The Housemaid Is Watching is a thriller by the American writer Freida McFadden, published in 2024.
The novel's tension comes from a past that the reader knows about and the neighbours do not, and from a small set of observations that add up to a warning: an expression on a face when a husband walks into view, a maid whose look is not friendly, and a house which has all the appearances of the life the narrator wanted. The marriage, the children's new school and the neighbours' assumptions about the family that has just moved in are all part of the machinery, and the book is as interested in how much of a new life can be built on an agreement not to explain the old one as it is in the threat that arrives with the dinner invitation. McFadden uses the domestic setting and the narrator's history of being on the other side of a closed door together, so that the reader is always aware of how much of this woman's safety depends on nobody remembering who she used to be. The book is part of a sequence of thrillers about the same character, and it is written for readers who want the mechanism of a suspense novel rather than the slow decay of one.
