The High King
In the last volume of the Prydain chronicles the forces of Arawn Death-Lord come south in earnest and the allies gather for the final campaign.
About
The High King is a fantasy novel for children by the American writer Lloyd Alexander, published in 1968 and the last of the five books of the Chronicles of Prydain.
The armies of Arawn Death-Lord are moving at last, and the companions introduced through the series have to be found, warned and brought to one place. Taran has grown from an impulsive boy into somebody kings listen to, and the novel requires him to make decisions about his own desires that an assistant pig-keeper would not have understood. Alexander writes the campaign in detail: the marches, the cold, the sieges and the way an alliance of unwilling neighbours behaves under pressure. The book is also an account of the end of a magical age, and its final chapters are about what happens when the magic is taken out of a country and the people who relied on it have to live without it.
It followed Taran Wanderer, and it brought the series to a close with the end of the age the earlier books had been describing all along.
