André Alexis2016Literary fictionAmateur sleuth

A professional thief in Toronto is asked by a woman he has befriended to steal objects from her brothers and sisters, because she believes that each of them holds one clue to where a large inheritance has been hidden.

About

The Hidden Keys is a novel by the Canadian writer Andre Alexis, published by Coach House Books in 2016. It is the third of a planned cycle of five novels, and it is set in Toronto.

Tancred Palmieri is a thief in his twenties with tastes that are more refined than his profession. Over several years he meets and befriends Willow Azarian, a drug addict who eventually tells him that she is the heiress of a very rich businessman. When her father died he left roughly a billion dollars to Willow and her four siblings, and Willow believes that there is more of the family fortune somewhere.

What makes her think so is a set of odd mementos that her father also left to the five of them, one each. Willow cannot persuade the others to join her in looking, so she engages Tancred to steal the objects from them, which is how the search begins.

He is helped in it by Alexander von Wurfel, a copyist, and by his friend Freud, and the novel is at least partly inspired by Treasure Island.
