The Fortunate Fall
Maya Andreyeva is a camera: a reporter in a future Russia whose virtual reality broadcasting equipment is implanted in her brain, so that what she sees millions see and what she feels millions feel.
About
The Fortunate Fall is the debut novel by Cameron Reed, first published by Tor Books in 1996 under the name Raphael Carter and reissued under her current name in 2024. The title comes from the Christian theological idea of the fortunate fall, and the book is set in the twenty-fourth century, after the fall of a United States world empire.
In that world most nations are third-rate powers except Africa, which is hypertechnological and requires a blood test of people who want to immigrate. Maya Andreyeva is a camera for a major news network, wired with sensory and telecommunications equipment so that she functions as both an on-location reporter and her own camera crew, and broadcasts her perceptions rather than a report of them.
Her occupation is the book's central subject. Everything Maya experiences passes through a screener, the one other person who receives the camera's full sense experience, and screeners burn out because they tend to identify too closely with people who cannot return the intimacy. It is that machinery of packaging and selling experience that Maya's chance to cover a massacre puts under pressure.
