The First Long Kiss
Gemma Grantham and Bette Dickens pool their savings for a luxurious holiday at the Hotel Splendide on the south coast of France.
About
The First Long Kiss is a romance by the English writer Denise Robins, published in a Romance Book Club edition in 1960. It follows two friends who spend their savings on a single extravagant holiday and get rather more than they bargained for, because a holiday like this one costs more than the money the two of them put in.
Gemma Grantham and Bette Dickens pool what they have and take a suite at the Hotel Splendide, having decided that a summer among the sun-browned and well-dressed crowd pictured in the magazines is exactly what they need. Gemma has a dull working life behind her in the north of England, and the resort seems to offer both escape and a taste of the fortune she once had.
Having decided to present herself as an heiress, she is taken up by Rudy Shore, who is handsome and looking for a fortune to marry. Excitement follows excitement, including a shipwreck off the coast of Brittany, and the novel works its way towards the conclusion that love finds a way, arriving at the long kiss of the title.
