The Eyes of Darkness
A year after her son Danny is said to have died on a camping trip, the stage producer Tina Evans is preparing a new show in Las Vegas and trying to decide whether she is allowed to be happy again.
About
The Eyes of Darkness is a thriller by the American writer Dean Koontz, published in 1981.
Tina's grief is written as a practical problem, since her work requires her to be competent in public while privately she has been unable to accept an accident that produced no body and no explanation she believes. The signals she receives, which arrive as dreams and messages rather than information, push her towards the only step that could settle the question, and her decision to have the grave opened brings the first of the people who want her to stop. She is helped by Elliot Stryker, a lawyer who used to work for Army intelligence and who knows how to read the behaviour of men who are following somebody. What the two of them uncover is a government research project with a name taken from myth, a laboratory in the Sierra Nevada, and a set of experiments on children that has been kept out of every record. Koontz wrote a long series of thrillers on either side of this one, and the novel's method is typical of them: a private grief is inflated into a conspiracy that reaches the state.
