The Endless Lake

The Endless Lake is an adventure novel by Erin Hunter, published in 2014 and the fifth book of a sequence about a pack of dogs. Its central figure is Lucky, who leads his pack through a world that has been broken and then rearranged.

The lake the pack reaches appears to go on forever, and they come to its edge expecting to find something and find more danger instead. Behind them are the Fierce Dogs, who are still on their trail, and ahead of them is the event the dogs call the Storm of Dogs.

The novel sets the two threats against each other, so the pack has to keep moving without being able to see where it is going. Every dog in the group is required to fight for its own survival, and the book is about the cost of that requirement for animals whose loyalty to one another is the only thing they have left.

The pack's progress is measured in what it can carry and who is still with it, and the lake is the obstacle that forces those questions. The Storm of Dogs is the event everything is moving towards, and the book leaves it waiting on the horizon.
