The Devil's Punchbowl
Penn Cage was a prosecuting attorney who sent killers to death row, and now he is the mayor of the town he grew up in, where the arrival of casino gambling has changed everything.
About
The Devil's Punchbowl is a thriller by the American writer Greg Iles, published in 2008. It is the third of the novels to feature Penn Cage, a lawyer who has come back to his home town of Natchez, Mississippi.
As a prosecutor, Cage sent hardened killers to prison, and as mayor he has to deal with the people who have come to the town since it turned to casino gambling to raise money and create jobs. Five steamboats float on the river beside the old slave market, and the rumour among the players is that one of them has found a way to pull the high spenders away from Las Vegas.
The boat called the Magnolia Queen is the one the rumour is about, and what goes on aboard it is the subject of the rest of the book. Cage is urged by old friends to restore the town to what it was, which is a harder thing to do than to say when the money comes from the tables.
