The Dark Forest
The first alien fleet is four centuries away, and the beings inside it have an advantage that no defence can answer: particles that watch and report everything humanity does, so that no plan can be kept secret.
About
The Dark Forest is a science fiction novel by the Chinese writer Cixin Liu, published in English translation in 2015 and the second book of the trilogy that began with The Three-Body Problem.
Earth has been told that a fleet is coming and that it will arrive in about four hundred years. The collaborators who had been hiding among humans have been dealt with, but the sophons remain: subatomic particles that give the visitors access to every piece of information humanity records, which means any defence can be read as soon as it is written down. The only thing that cannot be seen from outside is the inside of a human mind, and that is the reasoning behind the Wallfacer Project, which grants four men almost unlimited resources to work out a strategy in secret and to mislead everyone about what it is.
The novel is the second part of the trilogy.
