The Dark Arena
An American veteran of the Second World War goes back to Germany after the fighting to find the woman he left there, and stays.
About
The Dark Arena is the first novel by the American writer Mario Puzo, published in 1955. It is set in Germany during the American occupation after the Second World War.
Walter Mosca is the veteran at the centre of it. He returns to Germany for the sake of a woman named Hella, and the novel follows the life he makes there rather than the one he was supposed to go home to.
The Germany of the book is a place where ordinary ways of measuring value have stopped working, and where the thing everybody wants is not the German mark or even the dollar but cigarettes made in America. Mosca stays because of Hella and because there is nothing waiting for him at home. The novel is about what that does to the people living in it.
It was well received by reviewers at the time, though it did not sell as well as the books Puzo wrote later, and it has been read since as one of the better novels to come out of the American occupation.
