The Affair
In 1997 a woman is found murdered near an army base in Carter Crossing, Mississippi, and the evidence points to a soldier.
About
The Affair is the sixteenth book in the Jack Reacher series by the British writer Lee Child, published in 2011. It is a prequel, set six months before the first novel in the series, and it explains how Reacher's career in the army came to an end.
In March 1997, Major Jack Reacher is briefed by his superior, Colonel Leon Garber, on a murder in Mississippi. A woman has been found dead with signs that she was raped, and Captain Reed Riley, who commands a nearby Army Ranger base, has emerged as a suspect.
Another military police investigator has already been assigned to the case. Reacher's orders are to go undercover, watch what the other investigation does and make sure the army's reputation is not damaged, which is not the same thing as finding out who killed the woman. The novel is written in the first person, and the town, the base and the railroad track where the body was left all turn out to be part of the same arrangement.
