Sunset Embrace
Lydia Bryant joins a wagon train bound for Texas with a secret she does not intend to explain and a determination that no man will ever have power over her again.
About
Sunset Embrace is a novel by the American writer Sandra Brown, published in 1990 and set on the overland trail to Texas.
The wagon train is the world of the book: the dust, the river crossings, the deaths and the quarrels, and the arrangements people make in order to survive a journey of months. Lydia is running from something she will not name and has decided that she will never again be at the disposal of a man, which makes her dealings with Ross difficult for both of them. Ross has a reputation and a history of trouble with the law, and he is as unwilling to be managed as she is. Brown writes the attraction and the danger at the same temperature, and the plot keeps the two of them in each other's company while the men who are following get closer, until the reckoning the journey has been promising arrives.
It is one of the author's early historical romances, written before the long run of contemporary suspense novels that made her name.
