Suddenly You
Amanda Briars is a successful novelist who has reached her thirtieth birthday without ever having been kissed, and she decides to buy herself an improper present: one night with a stranger.
About
Suddenly You is a historical romance by the American writer Lisa Kleypas, published by Avon Books in 2001. It is set in nineteenth-century London and deals with a woman whose public success and private experience do not match.
Amanda Briars writes novels for a living, which is unusual for a woman of her period and the reason she can live as she does, and she has spent her adult life working rather than being courted. Her thirtieth birthday prompts her to arrange the one experience she has never had, and the man who comes to the house is not the anonymous stranger she was expecting but Jack Devlin, whose business interests and blunt manner make him a difficult person to keep at a distance. Amanda's difficulty is that her career depends on the reputation she would lose if the arrangement became known, which gives Devlin something to trade with. The book follows the two of them as the balance of advantage shifts, and it is as concerned with the practicalities of publishing and money as with the romance.
Kleypas set several of her novels in the same period and social world, and this one gives its heroine an occupation and an income rather than a fortune she has inherited.
