Michael Donovan is a man used to getting his way and he is not gentle about how he gets it. The two of them are matched in stubbornness and mismatched in method, which is where the conflict of the novel sits. Michael overcomes her objections by persuasion and pushes her into a marriage at very short notice, and after that the two of them have to work out what they have agreed to. A misunderstanding between them comes close to ending the marriage before it has settled. What finally settles it is that he convinces her his promise to love her is permanent, which is the thing she has not been able to believe.
