Sons of Destiny
Darren faces a final confrontation with his archenemy Steve Leopard, and he looks for a way to trick destiny and avoid the requirement that one of them must die and the other become the Lord of the Shadows, fated to destroy the world.
About
Sons of Destiny is the twelfth and final book of The Saga of Darren Shan by Darren Shan, published in 2004. It closes the sequence that began with Cirque du Freak.
The book's conflict is stated as a condition rather than a battle. Darren and Steve Leopard are bound by a requirement that one of them will die and the other will become the Lord of the Shadows and destroy the world, so the novel's task is to find a way out of a prophecy that has been established across twelve volumes rather than to win a fight. The two of them have been bound to each other since the first book, and the final volume turns on whether a condition that has held for eleven volumes can be evaded at all.
Shan writes the series in the first person and in short books, which allows a long sequence to be read quickly and collected in threes, and this volume is the end of the whole arrangement. The sequence runs to twelve books, and the first three were the basis of the film released in 2009.
