Slade House
Down an alley beside a pub, through a small iron door in a brick wall, there is a house that is not always there.
About
Slade House is a novel by the English writer David Mitchell, published by Random House in 2015. It is his seventh novel, it began as a story told on Twitter, and it stands beside his earlier book The Bone Clocks.
The house is reached through a small door in the wall of an alley in an English town, and it is only there at certain times. Inside, visitors find rooms and gardens that answer to what they were hoping for, which for Nathan Bishop, a boy taken there by his mother in 1979 to meet a woman called Lady Grayer, means a garden and a playmate and a growing sense that he cannot trust anything he sees. The people at the centre of the house are a brother and sister who have their own reasons for wanting guests, and the novel follows a series of people who are drawn to the place, each of them as certain as the last that they understand what is happening.
Mitchell tells the story across several decades and several narrators, so each visitor's account of the house builds on the one before it until the pattern behind the disappearances is plain.
