School's Out Forever
It is twenty-four hours since Max Ride and the other bird-kids escaped the New York Institute, and they are still running.
About
School's Out Forever is a novel by the American writer James Patterson, published by Little, Brown in 2006. It is the second book in the Maximum Ride series about a group of children who were engineered to have wings.
Max and the others have spent their lives inside a laboratory, and the first book ended with them escaping it. This one begins the day after, with the group on the road, hunted and responsible for one another. There are six of them, each with wings and the ability to fly, and they have taken documents on the way out that may say who their parents were and what they were made for. The immediate problem is practical: where to sleep, what to eat and how to stay ahead of the adults who want them back. The larger problem is that the information they carried out is in fragments, and decoding it means trusting each other with decisions that a group of children on the run are not equipped to make.
Patterson writes the books in Max's voice, so the reader follows the oldest of the group as she tries to hold it together, and the series went on to several further volumes.
