Scary Stories for Young Foxes
The haunted season has come to the Antler Wood, and no fox kit is safe in it.
About
Scary Stories for Young Foxes is a children's book by Christian McKay Heidicker with illustrations by Junyi Wu, published in 2019. It was first imagined as something like the scary stories written for the Berenstain Bears, and was rewritten into a set of tales based on classic horror stories.
The book is made of eight connected stories told by an old vixen as cautionary tales to a new generation of kits. Mia and Uly are the two foxes the stories follow, and they come from different dens; both of them are separated from their families and have to fend for themselves against the dangers of the forest.
Those dangers include predators, human beings and other foxes, and the haunted season is the time when none of the kits is safe. The stories take the two of them through field and forest in search of a den, past a zombie, a witch and a ghost, and the book keeps the frightening material at the scale of the animals who have to live through it.
