SAS Survival Handbook
The SAS Survival Handbook is a guide to surviving in difficult circumstances by John Wiseman, published in 1986 and based on the training of the Special Air Service.
About
John Wiseman published The SAS Survival Handbook in 1986. It sets out, in the form of a course, what the British Army's Special Air Service teaches about staying alive and getting out of trouble in difficult places.
The book is a manual rather than a narrative, and it is organised by situation. It deals with being prepared before anything goes wrong, with first aid and campcraft, and with the procedures for an accident or an escape, including what to do about chemical and nuclear hazards.
Much of it is given over to climate and to food. Wiseman explains how to adapt to polar, tropical and desert conditions, how to build a shelter and make a fire, how to find and identify plants that can be eaten, and how to manage at sea. The advice is deliberately practical, it is illustrated throughout, and the book is one of the titles that established the survival manual as a popular form in the 1980s, drawing many readers who had no intention of ever needing it.
