Sapphire Battersea
Hetty is fourteen and has just been discharged from the Foundling Hospital, and she goes into service as a scullery maid.
About
Sapphire Battersea is a novel for young readers by the English writer Jacqueline Wilson, published in 2011. It is the second book of the Hetty Feather trilogy, and it carries on where the first left off.
Hetty is fourteen when the story begins, and she has been discharged from the Foundling Hospital, which means she has to earn her own living. What she finds is a place as a scullery maid.
She has also discovered that Ida, the kitchen maid at the hospital, is her mother, and she has been getting up at night to see her. What she wants is to find her father, Robert, who like her has red hair, and she dreams of becoming a writer.
The name she writes under is Sapphire Battersea, which is the name she would rather have than the one the hospital gave her. It is the second of three books about her, it was written for readers of about her age, and it was illustrated by Nick Sharratt. The trilogy follows her from the hospital into the life she makes for herself afterwards.
