Rock Paper Scissors
Adam and Amelia Wright have been married for ten years and the marriage has not been going well for most of them.
About
Rock Paper Scissors is a psychological thriller by the British writer Alice Feeney, published in August 2021 and her fourth novel.
The couple's situation is established through letters written on each wedding anniversary, which run alongside the weekend and tell the reader a version of the marriage that neither of them would give in person. Adam's face blindness is more than a detail, since a man who cannot read the person in front of him has to rely on behaviour, and the novel uses that to make ordinary scenes uncertain without the narrator lying. The chapel in the Scottish countryside has an owner with her own reasons for being there, the weather closes in, and the usual devices of the genre, including a missing person and a locked door, arrive in a form that the reader can just about keep up with. Feeney's earlier books had made her one of the reliable names in the domestic suspense market, and this one was announced for television as a six-part series by Netflix in April 2021, before its publication.
