Poppy Girl
Philippa Ingram is told that she may inherit a woollen mill in Cumbria, and takes the news calmly.
About
Poppy Girl is a romance novel by the British writer Jacqueline Gilbert, issued by Mills & Boon in this printing of 186 pages, ISBN 9780263753813, dated 1986.
Philippa Ingram is a sensible woman who is informed without much ceremony that she may be the heir to the Copperthwaite Wool Mills in Cumbria. The prospect of money does not overwhelm her. On holiday in Avignon she meets Francis Balfour, a man whose reputation in the town is that of somebody who breaks hearts and is not the marrying kind, and she lets herself be carried away by him regardless. When he does propose, she cannot bring herself to believe that his reasons are the same as hers, and the suspicion that he wants the mill rather than her is what the novel turns on.
Philippa's inheritance and her holiday romance arrive at the same time, and the novel keeps the two of them tied together.
