One Last Stop
August Landry moves to New York expecting to be proved right about the world, and instead falls for a woman she keeps meeting on the subway.
About
One Last Stop is a 2021 romance novel by the American writer Casey McQuiston, published by St. Martin's Press. It is her second published novel.
August Landry is twenty-three, cynical, and new to New York, where she works in a twenty-four hour pancake diner and shares a flat with a household of roommates. On the subway she meets Jane Su, a butch punk who dresses and talks like the 1970s and who cannot get off the train. August, who has read enough missing person cases to think of herself as an amateur detective, starts trying to work out what happened to Jane, and the two of them fall in love along the way.
McQuiston has said the time travel element was inspired by the television series Outlander, and that the setting came from thinking about public transport as a place where lives cross briefly and repeatedly. The romance is between two women, and the New York of the book is a city of queer bars, night shifts and chosen family.
