No Time for Goodbye
Cynthia Bigge is fourteen and has just had a fight with her parents when she goes to bed, and in the morning her mother, her father and her brother are gone.
About
No Time for Goodbye is a thriller by the Canadian writer Linwood Barclay, published in 2007.
One evening in May 1983, fourteen-year-old Cynthia Bigge quarrels with her parents about a boy and goes to bed, and when she wakes the house is empty: her father, her mother and her brother have disappeared without any sign of what happened to them. The novel picks her up twenty-five years later, married to a teacher named Terry Archer and the mother of a daughter, still living with a question that nobody has ever answered. When a television programme offers to reconstruct the case, she agrees to take part, and the attention that follows sets off a series of events which suggests that somebody has known more about the night in 1983 than they have said. The story is told by her husband, which keeps the reader outside Cynthia's own certainty and makes the question of what she remembers part of the puzzle.
The book was one of the best-selling novels of its year in Britain, and Barclay followed it with several more thrillers about ordinary people in ordinary towns.
