N or M?
Tommy and Tuppence Beresford are brought back into intelligence work during the Second World War and sent to a seaside hotel, where they are to find a pair of enemy agents living under other names among the guests.
About
N or M? is a mystery novel by the English writer Agatha Christie, published in 1941 in the United States by Dodd, Mead and Company and in Britain by the Collins Crime Club in the same year.
It is the first book to feature Tommy and Tuppence Beresford as a married couple in middle age. They had appeared before in The Secret Adversary in 1922 and in the short stories collected as Partners in Crime in 1929, and by this book the pair of them are long past their youth and have been out of the intelligence world for years.
The war brings them back in. Tommy is given the task of finding two enemy agents who are living under assumed names, one a man and one a woman, among the guests at a hotel on the coast, and Tuppence is not willing to be left out of it.
The title comes from a question in the catechism of the Book of Common Prayer, which asks what a person's Christian name is and answers N. or M., standing for nomen vel nomina, or name or names.
