About
Mrs. Mike, the Story of Katherine Mary Flannigan is a novel by the American writers Benedict and Nancy Freedman, set in the Canadian wilderness in the early 1900s. It was initially serialised in the Atlantic Monthly and was the March 1947 selection of the Literary Guild.
The book combines the landscape and hardships of the Canadian North with the love story of Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant Mike Flannigan and the young Katherine Mary O'Fallon, newly arrived from Boston, Massachusetts. The novel is based on the stories of Katherine Mary O'Fallon Knox, and in its fictionalised account of her life she travels to Calgary in 1907 at the age of sixteen to visit her uncle and to recover from pleurisy, and meets and marries Flannigan there. The narrative follows the two of them into the north and through the ordinary and extraordinary difficulties of living at that distance from everything they had known. The book was a critical and popular success with twenty-seven non-American editions, and it was published as an Armed Services Edition for American servicemen serving abroad.
Some readers have treated the novel as a young-adult classic, and it has stayed in print in many editions since it first appeared.
