Mrs Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway married four times, and this novel gives each of the four women a turn: Hadley Richardson in Paris, Pauline Pfeiffer, Martha Gellhorn in Spain and Cuba, and Mary Welsh.
About
Mrs Hemingway is a biographical novel by the English writer Naomi Wood, published in 2014.
The book is told by the four women Ernest Hemingway married: Hadley Richardson, his first wife, who lived with him in Paris; Pauline Pfeiffer, who had been Hadley's friend; Martha Gellhorn, the war correspondent he followed to Spain and Cuba; and Mary Welsh, who was with him at the end. Each of them speaks in turn about the same man, and each woman's section reaches the point at which she learns that the marriage is over and that the successor is already present. Wood writes the book in four distinct voices and in a series of domestic scenes, so that the writer whose life is being quarrelled over is mostly seen from the sidelines.
The novel is one of several books about Hemingway's marriages, and it was written as a companion to the story of his first wife rather than as a life of the author. Wood moves between Paris, Key West, Madrid and Cuba, and the four sections are written so that the women's voices do not blend into one another.
