Moving Mars
Casseia Majumdar grows up in one of the old Martian family syndicates, in a society that runs its own affairs and resents the influence of Earth.
About
Moving Mars is a science fiction novel by the American writer Greg Bear, published in 1993 and narrated by Casseia Majumdar.
Mars has been settled for centuries by extended families called Binding Multiples, which own the land and the water and run the planet's affairs between them. Earth, the Moon and Mars form an economic bloc that Earth would prefer to manage from the centre, and the argument about unification splits Martian politics. Casseia is a student when she is drawn into a demonstration and a negotiation, and the novel follows her into government and into the crisis that follows. Bear gives the planet a working economy and a set of genuinely different institutions, and the decisive event in the book is not a battle but a piece of physics: a discovery by Martian researchers that changes what the planet can do, and therefore what Earth can demand of it.
The novel won the Nebula Award for Best Novel, and it was nominated for the Hugo and Locus Awards as well.
