Mountain Rose
Chase Donlin receives a letter from his dying stepsister asking him to take care of her daughter, and he agrees without knowing that the child has grown into a young woman.
About
Mountain Rose is a historical romance by the American writer Norah Hess, published in 1993 and set on the American frontier.
When Chase Donlin's stepsister writes to him from her deathbed to ask him to look after her daughter, he agrees without having any idea that the girl is grown up. Raegan arrives expecting the guardian her mother described and finds a trapper living by himself in the sparsely settled hills of Oregon, and the two of them have to establish what their relationship is supposed to be in country where there is nobody else to ask. The novel follows her introduction to that life, the work that has to be done and the difficulty of living up to the responsibility he accepted by letter. Hess wrote a long list of frontier romances with the same kind of setting, and this is one of the Oregon books.
It is one of several novels she set in the same part of the west, and the same small frontier community is the background of all of them.
