Mendoza in Hollywood
Mendoza is a botanist and an immortal, and she has spent a century and a half cataloguing plants in the hills above Los Angeles with almost nobody for company.
About
Mendoza in Hollywood is a science fiction novel by the American writer Kage Baker, published in 2000 and the third book in her series about the Company.
The Company is an organisation that travels in time and employs immortal operatives to preserve objects and information for a future that intends to sell them. Mendoza is a botanist who has worked alone in the Pacific coast forest for over a century, and being summoned to a stagecoach inn goes against everything she prefers. What she finds there is a household of cyborg colleagues from the twenty-fourth century, each with a history and a set of grievances, and the novel settles in with them: the food, the weather, the stagecoach traffic and the arrival of a drought that will change the country. There is also a mortal man whose presence is the beginning of the story Mendoza is telling, which is presented as a confession about why she deserted her post and killed six people.
It was published in Britain as At the Edge of the West.
