For centuries the Others and human beings have lived side by side in an uneasy peace, and when humankind oversteps its bounds the Others have to decide how much of humanity they are prepared to tolerate.

About

Marked in Flesh is a novel by the American writer Anne Bishop, published in 2016. It is the fourth book of the Others series, which is set in a version of this world where shapeshifters and vampires hold most of the power. It is the fourth of the series about the Others, the shapeshifters and vampires who share the world with human beings.

The Others and humans have kept an uneasy peace for centuries, and the peace has depended on humans knowing where the limits were. Since the Others took the side of the cassandra sangue, the blood prophets who can see the future and who had been exploited by their own kind, the balance between the two has become something else.

Simon Wolfgard, the wolf shifter who leads the Lakeside Courtyard, and Meg Corbyn, one of the blood prophets, are among those trying to work out what the new arrangement can be. The novel follows them and the community around them as the question of how much humanity the Others will put up with has to be answered. Their community is the Lakeside Courtyard, and it is one of the places where the two sides have learned to live beside each other rather than at a distance.
