James Adams is fourteen and works for a secret organisation that uses children as agents, because nobody suspects a child of being a spy.

About

Man vs Beast is a novel by the English writer Robert Muchamore, published in 2004. It is the sixth book of the CHERUB series, which is about a secret organisation that recruits children and trains them as agents.

The premise of the series is that adults are watched and children are not, so a boy of fourteen can go places and hear things that a grown man cannot. James Adams is one of the trainees, and he works under that cover.

Before the main mission there is a subplot at the training compound, where Lauren and Bethany try to smuggle care packages to the trainees and blackmail James into helping them, which ends with two of them punished and one of them let off with a warning.

The mission itself is to bring down the Animal Freedom Militia, a group that began as animal rights activism and has turned to violence. James and the others stay with a peaceful activist who has links to the wider movement, which is how they get close to the people they are after.
