Lost in the Barrens - Collector's Edition
Awasin is a Cree boy and Jamie is a Canadian orphan living with his uncle, a trapper, and both of them are drawn to the enormous emptiness of the northern country.
About
Lost in the Barrens is a children's novel by the Canadian writer Farley Mowat, first published in 1956. It won the Governor General's Award for juvenile literature, the Book of the Year Medal of the Canadian Association of Children's Librarians and a junior book award from the Boys' Club of America.
The two boys at the centre of the book come to the north from different directions. Awasin has grown up knowing the country and the ways of living in it; Jamie has arrived from elsewhere and brings the enthusiasm of somebody who has read about the wilderness rather than lived in it.
Their expedition takes them past the last of the familiar landmarks, and the book is about what the two of them do when the trip stops being an adventure and becomes a problem of staying alive until spring. Mowat wrote it from a knowledge of the north and of the people who live there, and the novel is as much about the practical business of survival, and about what two boys have to learn from each other, as it is about danger.
