Lord of My Heart is a historical romance by the English-Canadian writer Jo Beverley, published in 1992 and the first of her Dark Champion books.
Madeleine de la Haute Vironge has been raised in a convent and comes into her inheritance with a barony that needs a lord, so the king offers her a choice of three men and she is married to the one she would least have picked. Aimery de Gaillard is a warrior with divided loyalties: he serves the king who gave him the match, and he also spends his nights in the forest under another name, protecting the ordinary English people from the men who have been set over them. Madeleine notices that her husband is not where he says he is, and the knowledge puts both of them in danger, because the secret is one that would end his life as well as his marriage. Beverley wrote many romances in this period, and this is one of the earliest.
It is the first of the Dark Champion novels, and the books that follow stay in the same period of English history and the same part of the country.
