Look for Me by Moonlight
Cynda is sixteen and unhappy about being left at the inn her father and stepmother run on the coast of Maine, where the season is over and there is nobody her age for miles.
About
Look for Me by Moonlight is a novel for young readers by the American writer Mary Downing Hahn, published in 1995 by Clarion Books.
Cynda's father and stepmother have taken over an old inn on the coast of Maine, and the book takes place in the off season, when the building is empty, the weather is bad and Cynda has nothing to do and nobody to talk to. Vincent Morthanos arrives as a winter guest, and he is the first person in months to treat her as though she matters, which is why she does not press the questions that bother her. Hahn uses the furniture of the gothic story, the isolated house and the seductive stranger, and sets it inside a family that is already unhappy, so the supernatural danger and the ordinary loneliness are the same problem. The novel is written for teenage readers and moves at the pace of its main character's realisation rather than the reader's.
Hahn wrote a long series of ghost stories and supernatural novels for young readers, and this is one of the best known of them.
