Lipsi's Daughter
Ipatia is an orphan living with her grandfather on the Greek island of Lipsi, and she intends to leave for Piraeus to study.
About
Lipsi's Daughter is a romance novel by the Greek-American writer Patty Apostolides, published in 2004 by Jona Books. It is set on the island of Lipsi in the Dodecanese.
Ipatia has grown up on the island with her grandfather after losing her parents, and she has plans for a degree and a life away from the place she was raised in. Tony is the son of a shipowner and is expected to marry into money, which his father makes clear, and the novel follows the two of them across the obstacles that stand in the way: the difference in their families' standing, the distance between the island and Athens, and the expectations of the people around them. Apostolides writes the book in the tradition of the Cinderella story, with a Greek setting and a small-island society in which everyone knows the business of everyone else. The author is Greek-American and the novel draws on the place her family came from.
The book was published by a small press and is one of a number of novels the author has written with Greek and Greek-American settings.
