Liar
Micah Wilkins promises at the beginning of the book to tell the whole truth about what happened to her boyfriend, whose body has been found after he went missing.
About
Liar is a young adult thriller by the Australian writer Justine Larbalestier, published in 2009. It is written in the first person by Micah Wilkins, who tells the reader at the outset that she is an unreliable narrator. The book is written as though Micah is setting the story down herself, and she refers to the reader directly as she goes.
When the novel opens, her boyfriend Zachary, who had been missing, has been found dead. The story is told in pieces that move between Micah's family history, the way she met Zach and the investigation into what happened to him, and every piece is narrated by a girl who has already warned us that she lies.
As the book goes on she retracts statements she has made and replaces them with new ones, each time saying that this is the real account. The novel is as interested in whether a story can be trusted as it is in the death itself, and it won the Carl Brandon Kindred Award and a Davitt Award for best young adult novel. It also won the WA Premier's Literary Award for young adult writing and a Christina Stead Award.
