Last Days
A film producer with money and nerve pays a young filmmaker to make a documentary about a cult that ended in bloodshed decades ago.
About
Last Days is a horror novel by the British writer Adam Nevill, first published in the United Kingdom in May 2012 by Pan Macmillan and in the United States the following year. It won the British Fantasy Award for best horror novel in 2013.
The book follows Kyle Freeman, a filmmaker who has been hired to shoot a documentary about the Temple of the Last Days, a cult whose leader and followers died violently in a house in the English countryside in the 1970s. The commission comes with enough money for a small crew, a van and a schedule, and it takes them back to the places where the cult lived and died, including the house itself. What they record begins to include material that was not there when the cameras were set up, and the subject of the film starts to take an interest in the people making it. Nevill writes in the first person and uses the process of documentary work, its interviews and location shooting, as the way the horror arrives, so the reader is never further from it than the viewfinder.
Nevill had published Apartment 16 two years earlier, and his novels are usually built around investigators or visitors who go somewhere they should not have gone and find that the past there is still running.
