Lammas Night
In 1940, with France defeated and an invasion of Britain expected, a British agent brings back intelligence showing that Hitler intends to support the invasion with occult means.
About
Lammas Night is a fantasy novel by the American-born writer Katherine Kurtz, first published in paperback in 1983. It is set during the Second World War and deals with the Battle of Britain from the point of view of a group of practising witches.
The book opens with the evacuation from Dunkirk in May 1940. One of the men brought home is Captain Michael Jordan, who belongs to a group of occultists based at a house in Kent and who has also been working for the occult studies division of British intelligence. What he carries is information indicating that Germany is planning to take Britain with supernatural assistance.
Jordan takes what he knows to Colonel John Graham, known as Gray, whose work in espionage is matched by his practice of the old religion and whose life has been bound up with that of his friend Prince William of the royal family. The two of them set out to bring together the separated covens of Britain into a single defence, which is a difficult request to make of people who have kept their distance from one another for generations.
